The Strategic Role of Mechanical Completion in the Construction of Floaters

In large FPSO and FLNG projects, Mechanical Completion is often measured by volume—how many subsystems are closed, how fast the skyline grows. But progress is not about volume, it is about value.

A subsystem completed out of sequence, or not truly ready, has little impact on the project. It may appear “100% complete” on paper, yet still cannot be turned on due to missing utilities, incomplete loops, or critical punch items. This is where many projects lose time: commissioning receives systems that cannot advance the sequence.

The reality is that perfect Mechanical Completion across a complex plant is almost never achievable on schedule. Late engineering, procurement delays, and the sheer number of workfronts make it unavoidable. The key is not to wait for perfection, but to enable progress.

Successful projects focus on delivering subsystems in the right order, ensuring they are actually usable by commissioning, and applying a risk-based approach to handover. Mechanical Completion is not a finish line—it is a transition.
